March: The Gold Within the Cracks
A conversation with Patrizia Bortolin, the Wellness Designer of Kintsugi Space
In a world that often feels uncertain and fragile, spaces devoted to wellbeing are becoming more meaningful than ever. Places where we can pause, reconnect, and restore inner harmony.
At Kintsugi Space, the first women-only holistic members’ club in Abu Dhabi, this philosophy is guided by the vision of Patrizia Bortolin, an internationally recognised, award-winning spa designer, certified transformational and naturopathy coach and much more.
Behind her calm presence lies decades of studies and global experience designing wellness destinations and supporting individuals on their path to meaningful personal transformation. Yet what defines her work most is authenticity. Every practice she shares has been explored, lived, and integrated into her own life.
“Because a wellness path is something to embody,” she says, “not just something to talk about.”
Why are spaces dedicated to wellbeing so vital today?
“We are living through a period of profound change. People are facing uncertainty in many areas of life – health, work, relationships, even the future itself.
In moments like this, a carefully designed environment and a skilled, grounded team become extremely valuable. A wellness space is not simply a place to relax; it is a place where people can return to a calmer mind and a more balanced body.
When we step away from the constant noise within and around us, we rediscover something essential: our inner harmony is already there. It simply needs the right conditions to emerge again.
That is the intention behind Kintsugi Space – to offer women a protected space where they can feel supported, inspired, guided, and safe on their personal journey.”
How is wellness evolving today?
“For many years, wellness focused mainly on relaxation and escape. Today, people are searching for something deeper. Many guests arrive not simply to rest, but because they want to take charge of their health, deepen their knowledge of wellbeing, and cultivate lasting inner balance.
With chronic diseases affecting nearly three quarters of the global population, lifestyle has become one of the most powerful forms of medicine.
A well-designed retreat provides a professional and supportive environment where habits can be reset – sleep, nutrition, movement, stress – while also helping people learn how to take greater responsibility for their wellbeing.
For me wellness is like a musical instrument.
It holds great potential, but it requires mastery, sensitivity, and dedication to be played well.”
What inspired the philosophy of Kintsugi Space?
“The inspiration comes from the Japanese philosophy of kintsugi, the art of repairing ceramic pots with gold.
Instead of hiding the cracks, they are honoured, making the original piece even more precious than before.
This concept reflects something very true about life: our challenges and vulnerabilities are not flaws – they are part of our story.
At Kintsugi Space, we respect the natural intelligence of the body and the wisdom it carries.
The boom of the wellness industry often promotes constant optimisation – tracking every kind of data and correcting everything we can. While some tools can certainly be helpful, there is also a risk of losing trust in ourselves and becoming overwhelmed by too many messages.
My favourite approach is simpler.
Less fixing. Less performing. Less consuming.
More listening. More presence. More trust.
Wellness is not about perfection. It is about reconnecting with how we truly feel.”
Quote of the Month
“Feeling the body from within, breathing our words, flowing with life: enough for a lifetime”
– Patrizia Bortolin
What does the wellness journey mean to you personally?
“Wellness is both my passion and my work. There are many levels, paths, and opportunities, and I make sure everyone finds the right one for the stage they are at. For me personally, spirituality and self- and life-discovery through Quantum practices are a priority. I have become selective about treatments, and I live with meditation, silence, quality touch, Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, vegetarian nutrition, and above all, love.
Wellness is not a trend, nor is it a quick solution. It is a lifelong journey toward the real goals – awareness and presence. True transformation cannot be forced; it needs to be interactive.
At Kintsugi, every experience is designed with this understanding. Some guests come for physical wellbeing, others for emotional recovery, others for personal growth – and all come to feel calmer and more aligned.
Our team walks this journey as well. Qualities like empathy, intuition, and imagination grow through experience and are essential in guiding others. Because wellness, in the end, is not simply a service or a practice. It is a journey we share.”
Why create a space dedicated to women?
“Women carry a unique energy deeply connected to life – intuitive, receptive, and nurturing. Yet modern life often demands constant performance, which can distance women from their natural rhythm.
A women-only space allows a different atmosphere to emerge: one of safety, empathy, and meaningful conversations. This vision inspired the Pink Zone Project, an initiative supporting women’s wellbeing through workshops, gatherings, lectures, creative sessions and shared experiences.
When women come together in the right environment, they inspire each other to scale their strength, to rediscover their purpose, or simply to be one with life.”
Food also plays a role in Kintsugi’s Space philosophy. Tell us about “A Love Affair with Food”.
“Food is one of the most intimate relationships we have with ourselves, yet for many women it has become a source of pressure.
‘A Love Affair with Food’ invites women to rediscover food as a joyful ritual rather than a system of restrictions. Inspired by the Mediterranean way of eating, it focuses on simple, plant-based cuisine and shared experiences around food.
No calorie conversations. No rigid rules. No judgement. Just nourishment, pleasure, and presence.”
One final question: which experience at Kintsugi Space do you personally love the most?
That is a difficult question because every practitioner contributes something very special.
I love the Quantum Assessment with Dr. Keerthana – her intuitive approach always offers surprising insights. The Yoga Nidra and aerial sessions with our wellness manager Suparna are deeply restorative. I enjoy the Italian facial with Miriam, the revitalising detox massage by Loraine, and the Japanese facial with Laaleh.
The Gut Mastery session with Amon is incredibly enlightening, while Dr. Dhanya’s lavender Shirodhara brings a rare sense of calm. I also find the colour analysis with Ronza fascinating, and I try never to miss Emilia’s touch.
Sheryl is training to master the colour massage, and I am excited to see how she interprets it, because to me colour is one of the most powerful and accessible forces of transformation.
And of course, the experience would not be complete without the delicious plant-based cuisine created by our chefs – something we collaborate on closely. What elevates everything further is the atmosphere itself: the beauty, originality, and quiet elegance of the Space, the care of our gardener, and Cristina’s wonderful drinks.
Sometimes I smile while thinking: if I were simply a member, I would happily spend time here every day.
